Spiritual, Academic and Physical Practices

The thematic elements of Cathy’s yoga practice, flexibility, integration and concentration, are visible in almost every activity at Frog Holler. Whether at work or play, serious study or recreation, in "deep philosophical thought" or light conversation, there is not the option of isolated endeavor, complete specialization or rigid judgment. Cathy’s hatha yoga practice and Ken’s rational philosophy must exist side by side, having equal status also with Billy’s musical talent, Kenny’s interest in computer graphics, and Edwin’s baseball. The Kings, like most families, have had to learn not only pluralism but integration which is not hierarchical. Perhaps Ken’s philosophical concerns have been somewhat particularized by his commitment to a single piece of land, while Cathy’s associations are wider, reflecting the social aspect of her work, but the boys are not forced to experience this ambivalence in a negative way. Billy, Kenny and Edwin have grown up with the farm and their interactions with people and society have been limited but are positive and unique. If these are likely subject to change, it will probably also be important for Ken and Cathy to stay open to change no less now than when they themselves were starting out.
